Chih
Nan Temple |
 |
Chih
Nan Temple, built in Qing Dynasty
on the hills adjacent to the current
National Chengchi University, is also
called "Fairy Man Temple."
It is a Taoist temple consecrated
to Lu Dongbin, one of the 8 famous
Chinese legendary gods. The temple
being always filled with incense smoke
has been visited by believers except
lovers. Legend says that Lu Dongbin
tend to set apart lovers as he failed
winning the heart of his beloved.

Maokong
Tea House |

|
Chinkuashih
and Jiufeng had their heyday at the
turn of the century and were called
"homeland of gold." As the
mining business faded in the'60s,
the glory went into history but opened
a door for successful tourism development.
Chinkuashih has her special charm
of purity. It has attracted many nostalgic
visitors trying to recoup the past.
The curvy and steep mountainsides
require visitors to stop and ask local
people for road direction. If time
allowed, visitors are advised to stay
a few days more to appreciate the
changing charms of the coastal mountain
village. |
Sansias
Old Streets |

|
The
old streets cluster around Mingchuan
Road and Chungshan Road, and were
built around 1911. The houses along
the 200-meter long Sansias Old Streets
are the longest ones in Taiwan.
Here architectures are in Baroque
style or Fukien style, featuring
elegant red-brick arch corridors
and splendid tablet towers.
Sansias
used to be famous for the craftsmanship
in cloth dying. Dyed clothes were
traded by road and river all over
the country and hence gave rise
to many rich businessmen. Nowadays,
the preserved buildings are shops
of all kinds of products: antique,
crafts, dying clothes, tea, oranges,
quilts, paper arts and souvenir. |
Yingge
Old Street |
 |
The
history of Yingge pottery and ceramics
dates back to emperor Jiaqin of Qing
Dyansty. A pottery master made his
works with local clay soil, hence
started the pottery business in Yingge.
The current Yingge streets are reopened
with a new face, a mix of natural
landscape with modern shopping areas.
In Yingge Ceramics Museum, visitors
have the chance to marvel at outstanding
pieces of art and to get hands-on
experiences of working with clay,
playing mud or color-painting. Tasting
local snack foods is another fun to
experience. |
Sansias Master Temple
|
 |
As
a landmark in Sansias, Master Temple
has a history of more than 200 years
being the most important spiritual
center for local people. It is one
of the most remarkable traditional
temple architectures in Taiwan,
elaborately designed in its structural
layout and in each column and wall.
Praised as "The Oriental Palace
of Art," the marvelous temple
features extricate wood carvings,
stone and bronze sculptures instead
of traditional colorful lacquer
to stand out vivid subjects as human
figures, birds and flowers, mountains
and waters.
The
temple was damaged due to wars and
earthquakes. Master Lee Meishu took
lead with a group of outstanding
art professionals and students to
engage in a thorough renovation.
Even the most fastidious visitor
will be amazed by the state-of-art
works demonstrated by the temple.
Master Temple is devoted to the
monk-god Chingshui Master. The building
is adorned with mythical and auspicious
representations in joyous colors.
It draws endless streams of visitors
daily to pray and to offer incense.
