Gate
of Taroko Gorge |

Taroko
National Park is world famous for
its stupendous marble canyons with
steep walls. The unique scenes created
by geologic uplifting and river erosion
are rarely seen elsewhere in the world.
Taroko is located at the cross of
Suhua Highway and Central Cross-Island
Highway where the eastern entrance
of the park and the Visitors' Information
Center are located. |
Tunnel
of Nine Turns |

|
In
fact, there are not only nine turns
in this tourist spot. The number
of nine for the Chinese stands for
"many." As the name suggests,
visitors will encounter many caves,
gorges and cliffs. Every time after
a rain shower, lots of rain falls
from the cliff walls and forms a
spectacular scene of periodical
rain waterfalls.
Pass
the entrance of the tunnel and keep
walking for about 30 minutes, visitors
will pass by a lively rock named
as "fish fries over dragon
door", naturally eroded by
Liwu river. Afterwards, there are
plenty of gorgeous marble gorges
and canyons.From Swallow Caves to
the Tunnel of Nine Turns, visitors
are advised to slow down the car
for a close look of the surrounding
cliffs, especially the most famous
Zhuai-Lu Cliff. It is a typical
marble canyon eroded by Liwu River,
with the highest point of 1,666
meters and a length of 1,200 meters.

Eternal
Spring Shrine |

|
Eternal
Spring Shrine is famous for its
aged temple bell, the nearby waterfall
and its hiking walkway. However,
It was built in commemoration of
the veteran workers who died in
1958 during the construction of
the central cross-island highway.
The highway was completed in 1960
and started service in May the same
year. It has become the most important
passageway road with beautiful scene
leading to Taroko.
|
Swallow Caves |
 |
Swallow
Caves are next to Liwu River and opposite
to the central cross-island highway.
Visitors inside the cave are amazed
by the steep marble cliffs, with many
holes of different sizes. The cave
gets its name as legend says that
flocks of swallows used to nesting
in these holes.
Just a few steps out of Swallow Caves,
there are many oddly shaped rocks
formatted by river erosion. The must-see
is the one shaped by natural force
as an Indian man's profile. |
Marble Factory & Showroom
|
 |
Hualien
has experienced numerous times of
geologic metamorphism and therefore
has a huge deposit of marbles of
different strips and shapes. Many
stone sculptures and artisans cluster
here to craft an amazing range of
products. Hualien also hosts the
International Stone Sculpture Festival
every two year.
