Wenwu
Temple is situated on the north
mountainside of Sun Moon Lake. There
is a marble tablet writes "Wenwu
Temple" in front side and "Uphold
Literacy" and "Emphasize
Strength" on two sides.
The
temple structure includes one courtyard,
two halls and three palaces, which
is exactly the layout seen in most
Taiwan temples. The centrally located
Main Palace serving Chinese General
Guang Yu is called "Palace
of Martial Deity." The Rear
Palace is dedicated to Confucius
and called "Dachen Palace."

Tse
En Pagoda |

|
Tse
En Pagoda was built by Chiang Kai-shek
in 1971 in commemoration of his
beloved mother. With a height of
9 floors , the pagoda is the landmark
of Sun Moon Lake. The top point
of the pagoda, exactly 1,000 meters
above sea level, serves to be the
best place to enjoy the Sun Moon
Lake scene, with the Sun Lake to
the right and the Moon Lake to the
left.
|
Holy Monk Shrine
|
 |
Holy
Monk Shrine serves Xuan Zhuang,
the holy monk, relics and Sakyamuni
gold relics. Xuan Zhuang was an
eminent monk in the Tang Dynasty
who contributed a great deal to
the development of Buddhism in China.
|
Te Hua Village |
|
The
Yiyong street near Tehua Village
is the most revel walk path around
Sun Moon Lake. On the street there
are a lot of eateries and shops
selling Thao tribe souvenirs. The
frequent see souvenir is the hand-made
clothing made by the Thao people.
Visitors
can also try special Thao dishes
and the famous President Fish, and
finish their meal with tasty mountain
tea. |
New Central Cross-Island Highway
|
 |
New
Central Cross-Island Highway starts
from Alishan of Jiayi, passing through
Shishan, Tataja and ends at Xinyi
of Nantou. Blessed with enchanted
scenic views of mountains, waters
and forests, the highway is also
called "Scenic Sightseeing
Highway." Tataja Visitors'
Information Center provides abundant
information on tourism and pathways
for visitors to enjoy the beauty
of the area.
With 1900 meters above sea level,
Guangshan is an important site for
appreciating the vein of Yushan
Moutains. Also, this is the area
where visitors find fascinating
concentration of cherry flowers. |
Zhushan Sunrise
|
 |
The
best location for sunrise viewing
in Alishan is certainly Zhushan
Sunrise Viewing Area. The activity
is well-organized by a train that
whisks visitors from Zhaoping station
to Zhushan in 25 minutes. The sunrise
time and place in Alishan varies
each season. In the summer, the
sun rises at 5:00 a.m.between Junda
Mt. and Xiuguluan Mt.; in spring
and autumn time, it rises around
6:00 a.m. between Xiuguluan Mt.
and Yushan main peak; in the winter
the sun comes out late at 7:00 a.m.
and appears at the south of Yushan
main peak. |
Alishan Forest Railway
|
|
Alishan
forest railway is designed by many
particular techniques to adapt to
the special environment. For example,
it has the Shay type steam locomotive,
with the "umbrella-like"
gear and vertical cylinder, a spiral
route railway with the largest slope
degree of 6.26% and narrowest turning
radius of 40 meters, etc.. |
Alishan Forest Recreation Area |
|
Alishan
is one of the most popular tourism
spots in Taiwan, presenting the
only forest railway in Taiwan, cherry
flowers blossom, autumn red maples,
Alishan sacred tree, notable sunrise,
the sea of clouds and sunsets. The
breathtaking sights available in
the 1400 hectares of Alishan Forest
Recreation Area are not found elsewhere
in the world. |
The Sister Ponds
|
|
They
are two natural ponds in high mountains.
Legend says that a pair of sisters
fell in love with one same man.
To avoid hurting each other and
tortured by affection to the same
man, they both jumped into the lake.
The lake occupies an area of 2,247
sq. m. and has a depth of 2.5 meters
at high water level. Visitors can
also enjoy the beautiful sight from
a wooden terrace built alongside
the Elder-sister Pond. |
Three Generations Tree |
|
The
two-generation and three-generation
trees frequently seen in Alishan
are a natural phenomenon of vegetation
life cycle. The first generation
trees fell and die, with seeds spreading
on some dried trees to come out
with a new generation of trees,
called the 2nd-generation. The same
procedure passes on to the 3rd-generation
trees.
|
Buddhist Tszyun Temple |
|
In
1919, local Alishan people inspired
by the sacred atmosphere started
building this temple. The treasure
of the temple is the ancient statute
of Sakyamuni, made by bronze and
with gold sand inside. It is a precious
gift from the King of Siam. |
