CAMBODIA GOLF COURSES

The world class Faldo designed Angkor Golf Resort is the best golf course in Cambodia. The six-time major winner Nick Faldo himself, received a blessing from local monks and then opened the golf course in December 2007, his first golf course in Cambodia. The Angkor Golf Resort brings Cambodia squarely onto international golf destination map.

Tess, fairways, and greens are all maintained as what you would expect from a Faldo designed and IMG managed golf course. The latest Paspalum turf insures excellent year-round playing conditions.

Angkor Golf Resort, Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Siem Reap course is a fair test of golf for all players and demands analyzing and strategy on every hole to score well. For instance, the deliberately placed bunkers and water hazards are tricky, but easily seen from each tee box. The greens have plenty of subtle undulations and they reward a range of approach shots. However, don’t be intimidated, each hole difficulty can be moderated by specific pin positions from easy to challenging. On top of that, various tee box location allows for both low and high handicappers to choose the right course length for their game.

The final 3 holes make up some of the most challenging, but enjoyable, holes on the Angkor Resort golf course. The par-5 16th is a 588 meters monster that is almost impossible to reach in two shots except for the very long hitters. The angle of the green together with the water on the left of the hole, poses a real challenge for those wishing to get their approach shots close. A careful lay-up, away from the water, on the second shot will leave a very difficult pitch over a deep bunker to a shallow green. Hole 17 is the longest par 3 on the course and plays to a green guarded by water on the right side. The back pin locations, in particular, will call for a well-placed shot.

The 440 yards par 4 finishing hole is as good as they come and will certainly lead to some dramatic finishes, a Faldo signature! The hole is slightly curved to the left. However, water runs down the left side affecting both the tee shot and the approach. The best tee shot must challenge the water on the left to open up the approach into the green.

The Siem Reap Booyoung Country Club (formerly Siem reap Lake Golf Resort) was the third international standard golf course to be opened in Angkor Wat. The $150 million US dollar course took 1 year to construct and is situated only 6 kilometers from the center of Siem Reap town.

The course was designed by Kentaro Sato, the well-known Japanese golf course designer. No expenditure has been spared making the Siem Reap Booyoung Country Club the largest Angkor Wat golf complex.

Numerous high profile local tournaments have been held at the course including visits by dignitaries such as the Cambodian prime minister. Luxury villas surround the course is a sight to behold in its own right.

The Siem Reap Lake Booyoung Country Club layout features generous palm lined fairways and with 5 sets of tees making it suitable for both beginners and the experienced golfers. Both nines open with long par 5’s which is a bit unusual. Additionally, the toughest par 4’s are saved for holes 9 and 18, ensuring that golfers maintain their focus through to the end of the front and back, respectively, to score well.

Noteworthy features of the Siem Reap Booyoung Country Club course are the winding creeks that cross several of the holes and excellent greenside bunkering, both which demand an accurate shot to score well. Several of the holes feature split fairways making way for both aggressive and conservative approaches to the greens. On the other hand the fairways are wide and flat and the greens are very large which balances out the course difficultly very well.

Course conditions are immaculate with the latest variety of Paspalum grass on the tee boxes, fairways, and greens. The club house stands out as the largest structure among the surrounding rice paddies. Elaborate saunas and showing areas are available for golfers’ bathing after the round.
