Considered to the most challenging course at the home of golf, St Andrews Links – Jubilee Course, once dubbed “The Nursery”, was only a 12-hole course originally intended for ladies and beginners. A full 18 holes today playing to championship length, elevated tee boxes afford views of the firth and town while exposing tee shots to the wind’s teeth. Greens, though smaller than the Old Course’s monsters, are well guarded by humps and pot bunkers. As with the Old Course, playing for position is paramount if one is to play well at the Jubilee. Not for the faint of heart, yet still a favourite of the locals at St Andrews.

The fairways pitch and roll making for awkward stances and more than the occasional challenging shot into hogsback greens. Spectacularly scenic from the 2nd hole forth, it’s Highland grandeur that can inspire high achievement on the course, or the more likely event of a high score.

Day 5: Inverness – Aberdeen (Breakfast)

This morning’s golf is at Moray Golf Club – Old Course, a classic links design by Old Tom Morris and a superb test of golf with deep reverted bunkers, undulating gorse lined fairways and smooth fast greens. Seven of its par fours measure over 400 yards. Like its famous namesake at St Andrews, Moray’s Old Course is unusual in that its first and last holes are part of the town and in full view of spectators. After golf, visit the GlenDronach Distillery. One of Scotland's oldest working distilleries, it has been creating the finest richly sherried malts for nearly 200 years. The well-informed tour guides will unravel the mysteries of the whisky tradition and will give a rare and inspiring insight into the personality and history of this unique distillery. Play your final round at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, spectacularly cut out of undulating dunes from the imagination and genius of James Braid. Royal Aberdeen has several claims to fame not the least of them that it was here 1783 that the rule that allows only five minutes to look for a lost golf ball was established. The highlight of Royal Aberdeen's sting-in-the-tail is the 18th, where a good drive must be followed by a second over a high bank in front of an elevated green, guarded by bunkers left and right. Visit the Glen Garioch Distillery following golf, situated in the back streets on the edge of the attractive Aberdeenshire town of Oldmeldrum. One of Scotland's oldest distilleries still in production, Glen Garioch, although perfectly acceptable at the normal bottling ages, is renowned for its ageing potential thanks to some superlative older bottlings through the years.
