Following a complete redesign to championship standards, Bali National Golf Club now measures 7,100 yards and proudly calls itself the flagship of Bali golf. Close to many top hotels at Nusa Dua, this Hawaiian-styled golf course has the golfer starting out through a lush tropical forest set on hilly parkland. At the turnaround, the back nine plays over more level land that is a spectacular presentation of landscaped coconut groves and man-made lakes. The final two holes calls for a golfer’s best; the signature 17th hole, an island green reminiscent of the famed 17th at TPC Sawgrass, requires surgical precision to avoid a watery grave. What follows on the final tee is dogleg par 4 that finishes with the golfer putting out in full view of clubhouse spectators.

Mountains in nearly every direction and beautiful hilly terrain make playing Giri Gahana GC a real treat, especially in the cool hours of the morning or late afternoon. Set at altitude, the golfer looks down onto the verdant emerald green lushness of mountain firs punctuated by landscaped borders of flower beds. A seemingly easy course with its wider fairways, Giri Gahana lulls the golfer into complacency, only to be caught out by the potentially hazardous greenside bunkers. Like most of the newer courses in Indonesia designed by internationally acclaimed designers, the Giri Gahana layout is of immaculate quality with plenty of fabulous holes that tempt and trick; the 10th which plays downhill and invites a big drive onto a tree lined fairway both left and right, or the 16th hole where special caution is needed to guard against a wayward drive into the thick obstructive rough down the entire right side of the fairway.
Batam Hills Golf Resort is an 18-hole championship course with a length of more than 6,200 meters, designed by Australian designer Max Wexler. It is located in the Waterfront City area of Batam Island. The golf course was formerly known as Paradise Bay Golf Club before it has been renovated in 2006. This par 72 parkland course offers a challenging landscape designed for both beginner and professional golfers, featuring undulating fairways, Tifdwarf Bermuda grass, water hazards and strategically placed bunkers in its two distinct 9-hole loops. The front nine is laid out through a jungle environment, providing undulating and tree-lined fairways, while the more open and less hilly back nine is surrounded by wide fairways. The signature hole is the par 3 hole #4 which plays at 140 meters, requires an accurate tee shot to a well-guarded green.

Dago Heritage 1917 Golf Course started life in 1917 as a nine-hole course until a further nine was added in 1994 by Japanese designer Chohei Miyazawa, turning the course into a stern test of golf skills and stamina. Not the longest at 1 km shorter than the average course, but that is more than made up for by virtue of its terrain and design. Perched on a mountain side, steep uphill fairways and exhausting climbs culminate in incredible vistas over the city of Bandung. One of Indonesia’s hilliest, it is 18 challenging holes of climb and descent to very narrow fairways, each of which are tiered like Balinese rice terraces and lined on each side by tall pines. The golfer borrowing a fairway will find himself either above or below the fairway he is playing back to, looking for a gap between the pine firs. The front nine extends down into a valley, positioning most of the tee boxes well above the greens. The back nine, plays back uphill to the clubhouse’s eagles nest summit. An English styled parkland course, each hole is distinctly different with its own unique set of challenges. There’s never a dull moment at Dago Heritage 1917 Golf Couse.

Pantai Indah Kapuk Golf Course (PIK Course) is one of the Damai Indah golf’s course that is positioned beside the Java Sea coastline that integrates relaxing pools and gently winding streams which is deliberately positioned as water hazards and bunkers. The “Spirit of the Sea” was created to provide fresh perspectives within the unique 72-par, 6,048-meter golf course by carefully combining the natural beauty of the coastal wetlands to form a playable golf course rich with strategic diversity. The course is being described by many golfers as being washed away by the beauty of the course itself and they are able to enjoy the game without any worries. Even famous golfers such as Anthony Kang and Simon Dyson felt that they had to try out the course themselves.
Hole 4, one of the most challenging holes requires one to land a well-placed shot and make critical decisions according to one’s ability. A tee shot placed close to the water will give a better approach shot while a tee shot on the right would have less risk, but a second shot will be more delicate as the water along the left of the green comes into play.
Hole 18 is unquestionably the most difficult hole of the course. It requires a combination of strength and good strategic planning. Just like hole 4, you are required to make one of the toughest decisions. To go for an easy tee shot and have a long and difficult shot towards the green or to go for a difficult tee shot, risk entering the water; then the second shot will be much shorter and straight to the green.
For those who want to warm up or practice before tee-off, the driving range provides the best simulation you can find. The range is finely equipped green and practice bunkers. Pantai Indah Kapuk Golf Course close proximity to the sea presents the unique opportunities to incorporate the Java Sea into lakes and waterways that virtually surround every golf hole.
Apart from the golf course, the facilities alone are definitely worth a visit and will impress any of your non-golfing friends. The clubhouse offers all the luxuries golfers in Indonesia have become accustomed to, including a restaurant serving mouthwatering delicacies which tingles anyone’s taste buds.

The clubhouse has three separate nine holes, the River Course, Lake Course and Plantation Course. These courses have held tournaments and can easily accommodate big crowds. Emeralda Golf Club has played host to several Indonesian Opens, the Johnnie Walker Super Tour, Dunhill Asian Masters and the Volvo Masters Asia. It is designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. This 27-hole club was designed on a grand scale. The Palmer-designed 18 is nothing but gracious. It is a playable, expertly maintained layout that challenges the visiting player without beating him up (provided he plays the appropriate tees). The 6th hole on the River Course is a good example — a brawny, striking par-4 that turns right before venturing uphill. It is a tough hole, but there is plenty of room out there and laid out on topography perfectly suited to captivate golfers to continue.
Its signature hole, the 6th on the Lake Course is one Southeast Asia’s finest examples of the drivable par-4. An extensive lake runs along the right side, extending golfers the danger from tee all the way to the green. One has to be mindful of wind direction and land a well place shot to prevent the ball from hitting the water.
Located near a city, yet it feels like a distance away, the setting at Emeralda Golf Club befits the Old World plantation that once occupied this area. The clubhouse was designed by internationally acclaimed Klages, Carter, Vail and Partners of California, in the tradition of Bandung’s celebrated Gedung Sate. Extending from the clubhouse out onto the golf course terrain are hundreds of colorful bougainvillea, white and violet lantana camaras and pink mosaendas. Apart from the 27-hole course, Emeralda Golf Club boasts to be one of the country’s best on-course spa facilities.

The Gunung GeulisCountry Clubis situated in the regency of Ciawi-Bogor. It is only a 45-minute drive along the Jagorawi Highway, approximately 50 km from the business center of Jakarta. Despite the short distance, you will not feel the slightest hint of the hectic and fast-paced city lifestyle. The extensive 450 ha of mountain terrain merge smoothly with the golf course giving you a far-reaching view and fresh mountain air. The atmosphere is both serene and pleasing.
Gunung GeulisCountry Club (beautiful mountain in the Indonesian languages) is at an elevation of approximately 400 to 500 meter above sea level. The site bounded at the north by the Cikeas River opens onto a view of Bogor and Jakarta in the far distance. One can feel how cooling the evenings are and how fresh the mountain air is. It gives the optimum climate and environment for good golf and great holiday. There are two 18 holes at Gunung Geulis Country Club. The West and East Course, the club house are fully equipped with facilities which include Resort Cottages, Convention facilities, a Health Centre, a Sport complex with indoor and outdoor facilities, Holiday Villas and Recreation Center.
The 18 West Course is the first golf course around Bogor built on the hillsides. The scenic and challenging terrain will be largely satisfying and put your skill and patience on a test. Thomson Wolveridge & Perret with their knowledge of difficult terrain have meticulously planned a layout which is enjoyable and tough journey for players from different levels. Those who play the West Course for the first time may very likely find it intimidating and tough. This can be easily overcome when one familiarize with the variation of strategies needed.
The 18 East Course is intended to be buggy course that goes with contour of the land. It comes with an extraordinary view. The undulated fairway relief and a bit of narrow of the lower 9-hole Valley Course is far more challenging in contrast to the upper 9-hole Hill Course which is relatively gentle and wide. All the greens have beautiful smoothing reliefs and good surface; hence the players need not worry about unfair slopes or breaks.

How exciting is the thought of golfing inside the crater of a volcano? Handara Golf & Resort offers that unique experience in the cool highlands 3750 feet above the rest of Bali. The first golf course on the island and a two-hour drive from Kuta, the long and winding road brings scenic changes worth the ascending journey through rice paddies and traditional villages. Itself surrounded by the crater lake of Bedugul and equatorial rain forest, the golf course is a mature tree-lined challenge of elevation changes; as with the 560 yards, par 5, 18th which opens with a distance gaining downhill drive, then claws back the yardage gained like an Indian giver with two approaches back uphill to an elevated green. Once ranked by GOLF Magazine as among the “Top 50 Greatest Golf Courses in the World”, Handara Golf & Resort is more mountain golf than island golf.

Situated in former jungle-land in the Cikeas River Valley, Jagorawi Golf & Country Club is home to two equally enjoyable and well-rated 18-hole championship courses, the Old Course and New Course, as well as a challenging 9 holes Z-Nine Course. The Old Course is the dame of all courses in Indonesia and clearly it’s a course that belongs to Asia’s top ten. It requires an accurate drive to have a good chance of scoring. It is also one of the few remaining walking courses in tropical Asia. The New Course is wider, more open and slightly more straightforward than the Old Course. With a choice of 4 tee boxes, players of every skill level can find enjoyment in playing it. The Z-Nine Course is a 9-hole layout and probably is the most challenging 9-hole course with six of the nine holes are bisected by the Cikeas River.

Bandung’s latest addition is Mountain View GC. With a name like that, elevation changes aplenty are to be expected of this course that measures just 5,583 metres from the back tees. Do not be fooled by the length or lack thereof; drives are onto undulating fairways, requiring some forethought for the golfer intending to seek the short grass. This par 72 Peter Thomson and Ross Perret design is one of the more unusual in that it has 5 par threes and 5 par fives, with the rest being the requisite par fours. At an altitude of up to 1,200 metres above sea level, Mountain View offers up a bird’s eye view of the entire city of Bandung. Most holes are stunning but the 10th hole takes the cake. From some 80 meters above the fairway, a precise tee shot to a narrow fairway is required, before an approach around a dogleg right to a small green uphill. Multiple tee boxes per hole presents various risk reward routes for both the casual and highly skilled golfer. Mountain View is the absolute jewel in the crown of Bandung golf and is a must-play.
Located off Dreamland Beach and between the brilliant white cliffs and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean, New Kuta Golf is Bali’s spectacular answer to links styled golf; a blend of rolling fairways, semi-rough of natural grasses, bunkers copious with sand, and undulating greens made more challenging by the fickle winds that sweep across the course. The front nine takes the golfer inland through beautifully undulating terrain before turning seaward on the back nine for a completely different windswept experience. A short iron or fairway wood into the green? Only you can decide. Rather than a signature hole, New Kuta can be said to be a signature course, one where the Asian Tour found fit to host the 2009 Indonesian Open. At New Kuta Golf, it’s not over till the fat lady sings, and a good round going doesn’t mean a good score until you safely navigate the cliff-treacherous and windswept trio of holes 16, 17, and 18. We hear an afternoon tee-off is best for a breathtakingly unforgettable finish set against a kaleidoscopic Balinese sunset.

Designed and built for the 1983 World Cup of Golf and established in 1976, this course is a Jakarta institution. Ever since Rex Caldwell and John Cook of the USA sat on top of the world in 1983 as World Cup Champions, Pondok Indah Golf Course has maintained its top ranking for its quality.
While the course was built mainly for a much-admired international professional golf tournament, it is noteworthy how flexible the course can be, catering to golfers from different level. Most courses simply choose to push their tees forward to accommodate average or less experienced golfers, hence it is always quite difficult for a course to feel ‘right; from all angles and tee boxes. This makes Pondok Indah Golf Course unique compared to the other golf courses.
A morning round of golf will usually be accompanied by a large range of birdlife and birdsong serenading you on every hole. Paspalm grass gives the fairways a tight yet springy texture such that you cannot wait to get out of your buggy and walk. The bunkers are consistent and strategically positioned. Like any good layout, PI will force you to use all fourteen sticks in the bag and test your full array of shots. Robert Trent Jones Jr. was perhaps flexing his right arm in the 19th when he said, “Every hole is a signature hole!” Standing on each tee feels isolated and unlike the last hole, yet the Par 5 18th, its designs stand out relative to the rest of the hole. Ten holes previously, the 8th also lingers in the mind. 220 yards from the blue tees, bunkers all around a classic long Par 3 that will test the even the professional golfers.
The delightful clubhouse, extravagantly greet you to this inter-city oasis. A traditional locker room, range of function rooms and fully stocked pro shop cater for all needs, be it social or corporate. Other than serving mouth-watering food, the veranda style restaurant-bar is undoubtedly the best seat in town to watch friend or foe get pass the tricky three-shot 18th. Many top players have commended its harsh but fair hazards, its strategic layout and splendid condition. It is an outstanding course testing golfers from different levels, from beginner to champions.
