The course in Nuwara Eliya Golf Club has some extremely tough and exciting Par 3 holes, significant elevation changes, massive trees that the fairways and make broad landing areas look small in comparison. It has very tight holes where an inaccurate shot with a slight deviation in angle is heavily penalized. It’s designed in a manner that you should never let your guard down and maintain your level of focus.
The golf course is surrounded by the city on all sides and you have to cross the road to progress to the next holes. The highest mountains in Sri Lanka are situated alongside the course – Piduruthalagalla (Mount Pedro), The Great Western & Haggala. The course was built by a Scottish soldier of the Golan highlanders for the British servicemen & officials who were posted at Nuwara Eliya. It was completed in 1889 & currently has over 2000 members. The town of Nuwara Eliya was built by the British & the entire area has great natural beauty with a salubrious climate right through the year.
From the very first tee, the course awards golfers who are able to hit in a straight direction. It is a testing tee shot, made all the more tense because you stand in full view of the clubhouse but don’t be intimidated, any dropped shots on the first can be clawed back on the par 5, 2nd, where the green is accessible in two.
The par 5, 6th, is the longest hole you can ever find in Sri Lanka; with a wide fairway it presents the perfect opportunity to pull out the driver and open up your shoulders. That said, careful with that driver though because the fairways are lined with well-established trees, a slightly wayward shot brings these into play. If you manage to stay clear of the trees further challenges lie in the cliffs and streams that intersect the fairways and the merciless gorse and bunkers, causing many a curse and bogey. The challenging 12th, 13th and 14th holes are referred to as ‘Little Switzerland’ due to their resembling hills.

The Royal Colombo Golf Club in Sri Lanka is a flat course with broad fairways which looks simple to beginners but it can be highly deceiving, there are many water hazards and bunkers. The Golf Club is a jewel in the city of Colombo surrounded by residential areas and business establishments. The Club provides its members with a facility that is beaming with historic golf memorabilia and a course that spans 96 acres. The beautiful fairway, natural habitats of some rare species of fauna and flora are the characteristics that make RGGC a jewel in the city.
The Royal Colombo Golf Club was the 2nd golf course in the world to receive the “Royal” character. This premier course in Sri Lanka is located centrally in Colombo and is an extremely busy course-approximately 75000 plus rounds recorded here per annum.
The roughs are a mix of buffalo grass & have a crab grass feel that takes getting used too – as the grass tends to grab on your clubs & first timers here do take a while to get a handle on this. The golf course has some very unique features which make a round here memorable. It has a large number of water bodies, a mature tree line (that one needs to avoid), tight fairways bordered by boundary walls that are all OB areas & the very unique distinction of having a railway line run through the course. Do not be surprised to be interrupted during your downswing with the sound of a whistle or the sight of an express train in your peripheral vision.
Apart from the amazing golfing experience that you will get, the RCGC has an excellent club that will take you back in time to the colonial era with an elaborate food menu. The Snack and bite menu at the clubhouse includes many mouthwatering dishes like Sesame prawns, Fried hendallas, Hot butter cuttle fish, Mustard pork, Devilled beef & chicken & Muffins too!
