Widely regarded as amongst the top five courses in Taipei, Miramar Golf Country Club is a 36-hole luxury golf resort with two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses comprised of four nine hole loops; the North, South, East and West. Championships are contested over the North and West nines, and feature twelve water hazards varying in size, accompanied by 110 American-styled bunkers and mature trees lining either side of the generous fairways. Anything other than the somewhat easy-to-find shorter grass more than likely calls for the golfer to take his medicine. The fast greens of various contours are enhanced by multi-tiers and canted to challenge the golfer. Only of modest length, the 410 yard, 9th on the North course plays as the second toughest hole; the usual Nicklaus feature of water runs down the entire right side from tee to green, putting pressure on the drive as well as the approach into the green.
The last hole in is the 500 yard 9th on the West nine that has a bunker splitting the middle of the fairway at the 270 yard mark forcing the golfer to make a choice, with the right side being the better for a more open approach to the green. Playing uphill, most will lay up short of the greenside bunker for a short pitch in. Miramar was the venue for the Fubon Senior Open in 2011, the first time that a European Senior Tour Event had ever been held in Taiwan, and spectators were thrilled to see local pro Chien Soon Lu coast to a five stroke victory.

Rated the best golf course in Taiwan four times, Sunrise Golf and Country Club is home to Taiwan’s most famous golfer and one time LPGA world number one, Yani Tseng. This course that carries the pedigree of the Trent Jones name is situated around one of the highest hills in the area and the natural elevation is brought into play with elevated tees and greens along with sweeping panoramic views. Big elevation changes expose the layout to coastal winds and calls for succinct aerial strategies and creative club selection into tighter fairways. Water features prominently on the course, coming into play on all but two of the holes, and there’s quite a bit of cross bunkering. Small, well-contoured greens also don’t offer many opportunities to run the ball up.
The front nine plays mostly uphill and the inward nine vice versa, and at a lengthy 6,610 off the blue tees, demand that the golfer bring his A game. The signature hole at Sunrise is the 10th measuring a little more than four hundred yards, and the golfer can see every aspect of the hole below as the fairway sweeps round in a crescent. A lake borders the hole all the way from tee to green, and the adventurous long hitter who favours a big fade could well find the green in one, while the more conservative would do well to keep the ball left. Bunkers on the far side of the fairway though, punish the overly cautious or the player who hooks instead of fades the ball. Sunrise can lay claim to being the toughest in Taiwan, and as Yani Tseng’s training ground, little wonder she was world number one for so long.

Golfing luminaries such as Nick Faldo, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods have teed it up at Ta Shee Golf & Country Club, a testament to its championship pedigree. In preparation for the 1999 Johnnie Walker Classic, Robert Trent Jones II effected a total redesign, rejuvenating the championship combination of the Kingfisher and Aigret nines, resulting in a flowing and picturesque shot maker’s course where golfers must hit well-executed and well-conceived shots to set up the best approaches. Since then, Ta Shee has hosted the BMW Asian Open along with other tournaments of the European, Australian and Asian Tour. Ernie Els commented that the “new image for Ta Shee Golf and Country Club enables it to be on the list of world class golf courses.” And a fellow named Tiger Woods said, “I’m very impressed that there is such an international-class golf course in Taiwan. The quality is Superb!”
A few noteworthy holes first timers to Ta Shee will encounter include the 386-yard par 4, 7th on the Kingfisher course. From the white tees, a decent drive will see the golfer getting wet. Laying-up however, leaves a little too much water to take on comfortably as the lake is a good hundred yards long to the small narrow green placed right at the water’s edge. Bunkers to the rear make the approach in truly challenging, no matter how well the drive ends up. The 173 year par 3, 2nd calls for an accurate shot to land like a butterfly with sore feet on the lightning fast green. Anything less will find the water in front and on the left, and bunkers almost everywhere else. Smart golf is again required on the Aigret nine’s 396 yard par 4, 4th hole, as 250 yards down the fairway, it narrows down to just 15 yards wide. Slice right, and the ball drops off a sheer cliff; anything left leaves a tree to be negotiated around, along with contentious bunkers guarding all sides of the green. This Robert Trent Jones II redesign is one of the best rounds of golf Taiwan has to offer.

Taiwan’s oldest and first golf club had very humble beginnings over a hundred years ago. It was a very rudimentary 3-hole affair before additional holes were tacked on, and a full 18-hole tract came to fruition in 1929 largely through the efforts of Japanese designer Akahoshi Shiro. Nicknamed ‘Cradle of the Golfers’, Taiwan Golf Club is also where many of the country’s top amateurs and professionals have honed their skills. The course now measures 6,923 yards and each hole presents challenges that vary according to the hilly terrain and wind direction. A popular competition layout, it’s a tight, exacting course which has stood the test of time rather well. The strong sea winds and lush vegetation lining the sides of the fairways require the golfer to exhibit precision control and good course management skill.
Featuring tree-lined fairways and small greens, the course can be stretched to over 7000 yards yet doesn’t play long in the summer as the ground is much harder then. Yet this also means that anything less than a well struck approach shot will not stay on the green, the course giveth and the course taketh away. As is the tradition at Taiwan Golf Club, don’t be surprised to find only male caddies, most of whom play to a single digit handicap.

Known as one of the best courses in Taiwan, the Orient’s award winning clubhouse is a part of the golfing experience. Dug into the land, the second level of the complex is the same height as the back nine, resulting in the golfer teeing off from the grassed-over roof of the clubhouse. A friendly challenge with most of the holes affording a direct view to the green, the course has wide undulating tree-lined fairways with water coming into play. Though the course is well bunkered, expect only poor shots to find the fairway sand traps; but entirely a possibility around the cleverly bunkered greens which are smaller than the usual, well contoured, and fast. Expect to return a better scorecard with good hands around the greens and a deft touch with the putter. Consider the front nine a friendly warm up before moving on to the tougher and more feature-laden back nine that includes two long par 4s measuring 460 yards from the tips.
A few of the more interesting holes includes the 14th, which plays to a wider fairway from the tee, with the approach into a slanted green only 23 yards across. At the 17th drives are required to be kept left of a water hazard, with the second shot into a green tapering from the front to a narrow neck. The 18th is a stirring finale with bunkers arranged around all the landing areas for the first, second and third shots. The whole round becomes even more interesting when the wind decides to blow.

Tong Hwa Golf & Country Club’s claim to fame is that the 7th hole was named one of “The 500 Best Holes in the World” by Golf Magazine. That reason alone should make the trip to play the course worthwhile. Located close to mountains and by the Taiwan Straits, Tong Hwa commands great views on a layout which sees constantly changing terrain through each of its 18 holes. It is a challenging championship-level course that has hosted a number of prestigious tournaments and seen the likes of the Taiwan PGA Championship and Taiwan Mercedes Open pass through its gates. The highlight of this Japanese designed course is of course the 442 yards par 4, 7th hole. Somewhat of a right dogleg, the conservative straight drive to just before a pond sees a tricky diagonal approach that is forced to take on the water and a long fairway bunker that runs all the way up the left side to the green.
Anything less than a perfect shot gets caught between the sand and a wet place. The longer hitter looking for the shorter more direct approach in has the option of cutting the dogleg, but only if his drive carries the bunker guarding the bend; a hooking drive could still find sand or water. A risk reward hole deserving of its listing as one of the 500 best holes in the world. Almost as impressive is the hole before, the 6th. A lengthy 226 yards par 3 with water running down the left and a massive bunker on that same side of the 80 yards long inverted L-shaped green. Par on this hole is an excellent score.

Don’t be confused if you hear Yung Han Golf Club and Saint Andrews of the East mentioned in the same breath, any similarities are deliberate. Having played the most celebrated golf courses during his extensive travels, and finding the courses back home lacking the culture and heritage of this great game he loved so much, the globetrotting founder of Yung Han was impressed enough by the Old Course at St. Andrews that he wanted the same Scottish links experience replicated along the Taiwanese coast. Interestingly, he commissioned Syunsuke Katou, a leading Japanese course architect known for creating layouts that intrigue and challenge the professional and low amateur, yet isn’t too penal for the social golfer, to design the layout. The mandate to mirror the ambience of a links course on the Scottish coast resulted in the classic beauty and modern innovation that is Yung Han, the St. Andrews of the Orient.
A championship level course of international standard, each hole is unique on its own, designed to delight and surprise at every turn, and at the same time inspire the golfer. Distinctively links in design, Yung Han plays to the undulating terrain of the nearby mountains with a noticeable lack of trees, unlike many courses in the area. Because of its coastal location, sunsets of magnificent hue are set against the backdrop of the undulating hills. The layout at Yung Han can be benign or a beast, depending on whether it’s calm or the wind whistles.
